Phone Not Recognized by PC Over USB: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 - 3 min read
A phone that charges but is not recognized is usually in the wrong USB mode, or Windows lost the MTP driver - not a broken port.
1. Unlock and pick File transfer
Connect the phone, unlock it, and on the phone tap the USB notification and choose File transfer (MTP), not "Charging only". Some phones show this only when unlocked.
2. Use a data cable
Many cables are charge-only. Try the cable that came with the phone, and test a different USB port (front ports and hubs are flaky).
3. Reinstall the MTP driver
Open Device Manager. Under Portable Devices (or Other devices with a yellow icon), right-click your phone > Uninstall device, then Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows reinstalls the driver and the phone usually appears.
4. Clear the phone's USB preferences
On the phone, open Settings > Developer options > Default USB configuration and set it to File transfer, or reset the USB preferences if a bad choice is stuck.
5. iPhones specifically
For an iPhone, unlock and tap "Trust This Computer", and install the latest iTunes or Apple Devices app so the drivers are present.
6. Power management
In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device" on the root hubs if transfers drop mid-copy.
Hardware note: If the phone shows as an unknown device everywhere, reinstall the phone's own USB driver from the manufacturer, not just the MTP driver.
