SD Card Not Detected on Windows: The Complete Fix

Published 2026 - 3 min read

An SD card that is not detected is either a dead card, a missing drive letter or a card-reader driver problem. Diagnose in that order.

1. Test the card itself

Insert the card into a phone or another reader. If it works there, the reader is the problem. If it fails everywhere, the card is damaged or locked - check the tiny lock switch on the side.

2. Look in Disk Management

The card may be detected but have no drive letter. Open Disk Management (right-click Start), find the SD card volume, right-click > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add a letter.

3. Check Device Manager

Open Device Manager and look under Disk drives and Memory technology devices. A yellow warning means the reader driver is failing. Right-click > Update driver, or uninstall and scan for hardware changes.

4. Stop the reader sleeping

In Device Manager, open the card reader > Properties > Power Management and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device".

5. Do not panic-format yet

If the card appears as RAW or unallocated, it may have a corrupt file system or failing controller. Copy the data elsewhere first if possible, then test with a formatting tool before you format.

6. Clean the contacts

Dirty contacts cause intermittent detection. Clean the gold contacts with a soft dry cloth and reinsert firmly.

Hardware note: Cheap card readers fail often; a USB card reader is a fast way to tell card faults from reader faults.
