USB Port Not Working: The Complete Fix

Most dead USB ports are software, not hardware. A restart resets the USB controllers and fixes the largest share of cases.

1. Try another port and device

If the device works in another port, the port is the problem. If the port works with another device, the device is. That simple swap isolates the fault.

2. Reset the controller

Open Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers. If there's a yellow warning, right-click → Uninstall device, then Action → Scan for hardware changes to reinstall.

3. Stop the port from sleeping

Random dropouts are often power management. In Device Manager → your USB device → Properties → Power Management → uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device."

4. Power-hungry devices

External drives and chargers can exceed a port's power. Use a powered USB hub rather than a passive splitter.

Why USB ports fail

USB faults are software (drivers, power management, a crashed controller) or hardware (a damaged port, a weak power supply). The sequence matters: reset the controller before you assume the port is dead, because a controller reset clears most "port stopped working" cases.

Power management is the silent killer

Windows can switch USB root hubs to sleep to save power, which makes devices drop or refuse to appear. In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, open each USB Root Hub > Power Management, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device." Reboot and test.

When it really is hardware

A port that fails only under load (external drive, phone charging) is usually underpowered - use a powered hub. A port that is loose, bent, or dead with every device is physically damaged; a USB hub or expansion card is the cheap fix on desktops.

Avoid yanking devices out under load, unplug by the connector not the cable, and keep ports free of dust and lint, which is a common cause of intermittent connection on laptops.
