Mouse Not Working: The Complete Fix

Published 2026 · 3 min read

Mouse problems split into two camps: wireless (pairing/battery) and wired (drivers/ports). Here's the fastest route through each.

Wireless mice

Check the battery or charge level first. Re-pair via Bluetooth or reseat the USB receiver in a different port. Test the mouse on another device to rule out the mouse itself.

Cursor freezes or jumps

Optical mice struggle on glass and glossy surfaces — use a mouse pad. Update the driver in Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices. A damaged USB cable causes freezing too.

Clicks don't register

Debris under the buttons blocks clicks — a blast of compressed air helps. Check Windows button settings (Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse). If buttons fail on another device too, the switch is worn and the mouse needs replacing.
