Windows Slow Startup: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 · 4 min read
Slow boot usually comes down to one of three things: too many startup apps, a mechanical hard drive, or post-update housekeeping. Here's how to hit all three.
1. Trim your startup apps
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) â Startup tab. Disable everything you don't need the moment you log in — updaters, launchers, and chat apps are the usual culprits. This is the fastest free win.
2. The hard drive is the bottleneck
Check in Task Manager â Performance â Disk whether you have an SSD or HDD. If it's an HDD, no software tweak will make it fast. The single best upgrade on any old PC is swapping the HDD for an SSD and reinstalling Windows on it — boot times go from minutes to seconds.
3. Post-update slowdowns
Big Windows updates do background work for a while. Let it settle, then run Disk Cleanup â Clean up system files to remove update leftovers and temp files.
4. Fast Startup
Turn on Fast Startup (Control Panel â Power Options â Choose what the power buttons do) — it makes shutdowns hibernate the kernel and boots much faster. It's on by default on most installs.
