WiFi Keeps Disconnecting: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 · 3 min read
Repeated disconnects are either one device's power-saving settings or a network-wide problem. The single most common culprit on Windows: the WiFi adapter turning itself off to save power.
1. Stop Windows from sleeping the adapter
Device Manager â Network adapters â your WiFi adapter â Properties â Power Management â uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." This fixes most laptop disconnects.
2. Forget and reconnect
Forget the network, re-enter the password, and update the adapter driver.
3. Network-wide drops
Restart the router and modem, update the router's firmware, and change the WiFi channel or switch to 5GHz if the 2.4GHz band is crowded. An old router (5+ years) often needs replacing.
4. Distance-related drops
That's signal strength — a mesh system or extender covers dead zones.
