Slow Computer Overall: The Complete Fix

Published 2026 · 4 min read

A computer that's slow at everything is usually one of three things: a full drive, too many background apps, or a slow hard drive. Here's how to hit all three.

1. Free up disk space

A nearly full drive makes the whole system crawl. Aim for 10% or more free. Run Disk Cleanup → Clean up system files, empty the recycle bin, and uninstall software you don't use.

2. Close the memory hogs

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and close apps you're not using — especially browsers with many tabs. A restart also clears accumulated memory leaks after long uptimes.

3. The hard drive bottleneck

If your system drive is an HDD (check Task Manager → Performance → Disk), no software tweak will make it fast. Replacing it with an SSD is the single biggest speedup available for an older PC.
