Printer Not Printing: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 · 4 min read
Printers fail in a few predictable ways, and most have a 5-minute fix. Match your symptom below.
Nothing happens when you print
Check the power light, then confirm the printer is the default device (Settings â Devices â Printers & scanners â Set as default). The most common hidden cause is a stuck print spooler: press Win+R, type services.msc, find Print Spooler, right-click â Restart. Clear any jobs stuck with an error in the queue first.
Paper jam
Unplug the printer for 30 seconds, open all doors and trays, and pull torn paper out in the direction it feeds — never yank backward. Fan the paper in the tray and don't overfill it.
Blank, faded or streaky pages
Check ink/toner levels, run the printer's cleaning cycle, and replace empty or dried-out cartridges. Genuine cartridges clog less than refills.
Printer offline
For a network printer, restart both the printer and the router. On Windows, right-click the printer â Use printer offline (uncheck it). Reinstall the driver from the manufacturer's site if it stays offline.
