Computer Turns On But No Display: The Complete Fix

Published 2026 - 4 min read

Fans spin and lights come on but nothing shows on screen. Most cases are a cable, input source or a loose component - not a dead PC.

1. Confirm what is actually on

Listen for beeps (see the beep-code guide) and check the power LED. A PC that beeps or spins but shows nothing points to video or memory, not power.

2. Cable and input source

Reseat the cable at both ends and try another HDMI/DP port. Use the monitor's input button to cycle HDMI/DP/VGA. If you have another cable, test it.

3. Full power cycle

Unplug the PC, hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain it, wait, plug back in and boot. This clears many stuck states.

4. Test with integrated graphics

If you have a graphics card, remove it and plug the monitor into the motherboard's video port. A display here means the GPU or its power cables are the problem.

5. Try another screen

Connect the PC to a TV or second monitor. If that works, the original monitor is faulty.

6. Reseat memory

With the PC off, remove and reseat the RAM sticks, then try booting with a single stick in the first slot.

Hardware note: If nothing changes after these steps and there are no beeps, suspect the PSU, GPU, RAM or motherboard - a shop can test parts quickly.

Prevention: If the PC posts fine after reseating parts, dust and loose connections were likely the cause. Moving a desktop can loosen the GPU and RAM, so reseat those before any long trip or major case work.
