Microphone Not Working: The Complete Fix

A microphone that isn't picked up is almost always a privacy toggle, the wrong input device, or a low level.

1. The privacy toggle

Windows hides the mic behind a permission switch. Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and make sure both "Microphone access" and per-app access are On. Restart the app after changing it.

2. The right input device

Open Sound settings → Input and make sure the correct microphone is selected. A headset on a two-jack laptop needs the mic plug in the mic jack, not the headphone jack.

3. Too quiet

Raise the input volume and enable microphone boost in Sound settings. Move the mic closer and away from fans.

Diagnose in order

Work from the cheapest check up: physical mute, Windows privacy, the default input device, then the driver. Most "microphone not working" reports are a privacy toggle or the wrong device being selected, not a dead mic.

Privacy and app access

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and confirm both "Let apps access your microphone" and per-app access are on. Deny the permission once and every meeting app goes silent until you restore it.

The default device is the usual culprit

Windows may be listening to the built-in mic while your USB or headset mic sits idle. Open Settings > System > Sound > Input, pick your real microphone, unmute it, and raise the level. Apps that were open during the switch may need a restart to follow the new default.

Driver and hardware

If nothing hears you, update or reinstall the audio driver in Device Manager, then test the mic on another device (a phone with a mic jack). If it works there, it is a Windows setting; if not, the mic is at fault.
