Keyboard Not Working: The Complete Fix

A keyboard that won't type is usually a pairing issue (wireless), a stuck driver, or a mis-set layout. Here's the fastest path through each.

1. Wireless keyboards

Check the batteries or charge level first. Re-pair it via Bluetooth settings, and try the USB receiver in a different port. Test it on another device to confirm the keyboard itself works.

2. Some keys work, some don't

Restart the computer first — stuck input drivers fix most cases. Update the driver in Device Manager → Keyboards. For missing keys, check for debris with a can of compressed air.

3. Wrong characters appearing

Turn off Num Lock (it makes letter keys type numbers). Then check the keyboard layout: Settings → Time & language → Language → set it to US (or your region).

4. When it's physical damage

Spilled liquid or a damaged keyboard usually needs replacement — laptop keyboards in particular aren't repairable at home.
