Internet Keeps Dropping: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 · 3 min read
The first question is whether the drop affects all devices or one. That single answer points at the router versus the device.
All devices drop at once
Restart the router and modem — unplug both for 60 seconds, modem first. Update the router firmware. If it keeps happening on a 5+ year-old router, it may simply be failing and worth replacing.
One device keeps dropping
Forget and reconnect the network on that device, update its network driver, and — the classic Windows fix — disable adapter power-saving in Device Manager so Windows stops turning the WiFi off to save battery.
WiFi drops but wired is fine
That's the WiFi radio or signal, not your internet. Move closer, switch to 5GHz, or try a USB WiFi adapter — if that's stable, the built-in radio is the problem.
