Forgot WiFi Password: The Complete Fix

You don't need to reset the router — the password is recoverable from a connected Windows PC or printed on the router itself.

Recover it from Windows

If a Windows PC is already connected to the network, the password is stored. Right-click the WiFi icon → Network & Internet settings → Advanced network settings → More network adapter options → right-click your adapter → Status → Wireless Properties → Security tab → check Show characters.

Check the router sticker

Most routers print the default SSID and password on a sticker underneath or on the back. If it was changed, log into the router admin page (often http://192.168.1.1) and look under Wireless settings.

Reset only as a last resort

Holding the router's reset button restores factory defaults — including the sticker password — but wipes every custom setting. Only do this if you can't recover it any other way.

Where Windows keeps it

If this PC already connects to the network, Windows stores the password and can show it to you - no reset needed. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, choose the network and view the password, or run netsh wlan show profile name="YourWiFi" key=clear in Command Prompt and read the Key Content line.

Find it on the router

Log into the router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, address on the sticker) and look under Wi-Fi/Wireless settings for the passphrase. The admin password is also on the router's sticker if you never changed it.

Shared and stored elsewhere

On a phone already connected, you can often read the password under Wi-Fi settings (share/QR on Android, or the saved network's password on iPhone if you own it). A Windows PC that connects can export the profile so you never re-enter it.

Last resort: reset the router

If you cannot access the router admin, hold its reset button for 10 seconds to restore factory defaults, then log in with the sticker's admin credentials and set a new Wi-Fi password. This reconnects every device.
