External Hard Drive Not Detected: The Complete Fix

Before anything else: if the drive makes clicking sounds, stop and read the last section. For everything else, the fix order is port → cable → Windows assignment → driver.

1. Rule out the port and cable

Try a different USB port, especially a rear port on a desktop. If the drive has a detachable cable, replace it — data cables are the most common failure point. Test the drive on another computer to confirm the drive itself works.

2. Give it a drive letter

Right-click Start → Disk Management. If the drive appears but has no letter, right-click the volume → Change Drive Letter → assign one. If it shows as "offline", right-click → Online.

3. RAW or uninitialized

If the drive shows as RAW or "uninitialized", the filesystem is damaged. Stop writing to it immediately. Do NOT format. Recovery software can often rebuild it, or a recovery service can.

4. Clicking sounds = data recovery time

Mechanical clicking is physical failure. Unplug it, don't run recovery tools on it (that makes it worse), and if the data matters, contact a data recovery specialist.
