Computer Overheating: The Complete Fix
Published 2026 · 4 min read
Overheating is almost always dust, a dead fan, or dried thermal paste. There's one case — random shutdowns — where you should treat it as urgent.
1. Dust is the #1 cause
Power down, open the case (desktop) or vent covers (laptop), and blow out fans and heatsinks with compressed air. This fixes more overheating than everything else combined.
2. Confirm with a monitor
Before replacing anything, check actual temps with a monitor like HWiNFO or Core Temp. Know the numbers — don't guess based on how it feels.
3. Check the fans
At idle fans should spin slowly; under load they should get loud. A fan that never spins or rattles needs replacing. Laptops also need a cooling pad and clear vents.
4. Random shutdowns = stop using it
If the machine shuts down or restarts when hot, that's thermal protection preventing damage. Clean it, check fans, and if it still trips, the CPU's thermal paste needs replacing — take it to a shop if you're not comfortable.

Heat builds where airflow stops
Overheating is rarely a broken fan - it is dust clogging the heatsink fins, dried-out thermal paste, or a laptop sitting on a soft surface that blocks the vents. Identify the cause by where the heat collects.
Start with dust and airflow
Blow dust out of the vents and heatsink with compressed air (power off first). Use laptops on a hard surface or a stand, and never on a bed or pillow - blocked vents are the number one cause of throttling and shutdowns.
Check and renew thermal paste
On desktops, 3-5 year old CPUs often need fresh thermal paste between the cooler and the chip. This is a 15-minute job and drops load temperatures dramatically when the paste has dried out.
Monitor before you spend
Install a temperature monitor (HWiNFO, Core Temp) and watch under load. If the CPU hits 95-100C or the laptop shuts down mid-task, cooling is the issue. If temperatures are normal but it still shuts down, suspect the power supply.
