Webcam Not Working: The Complete Fix

Black camera in a meeting is almost always one of three things: a privacy toggle, a driver conflict, or another app holding the camera. Here's the order that fixes most of them.

1. Check the privacy setting

Windows hides the camera behind a privacy switch: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Make sure both "Camera access" and per-app access are On. This is the #1 cause of a black feed on Windows 11.

2. Only one app at a time

Zoom, Teams, browsers and photo apps can't share a webcam. Close every other app that might hold it, then reopen yours.

3. Reset the driver

Open Device Manager (Win+X) → Cameras → right-click your webcam → Uninstall device, then Action → Scan for hardware changes to reinstall. Download a fresh driver from the manufacturer if that doesn't help.

4. Hardware checks

If your laptop has a privacy shutter, make sure it's open. For external webcams, try a different USB port. Blurry or dark? Clean the lens and add light.
