Laptop Battery Draining Fast: The Complete Fix

Published 2026 · 4 min read

Fast battery drain is usually a runaway app, an aging battery, or the machine waking up when you think it's off. Here's how to tell them apart.

1. Find the battery hog

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and look at which apps use the most CPU. Browsers with many tabs are the usual suspects. Close what you're not using and enable Battery Saver (Settings → System → Power).

2. Check battery health

Windows 11 shows it at Settings → System → Power → Battery health. Below ~80% health, the battery is aging and will keep degrading — reduce deep drains and heat, keep charge between 20–80%.

3. Dying overnight? It's not asleep

Sleep still draws power. Use Hibernate or shut down for long idle. Disable wake timers in Power Options so background tasks don't rouse the laptop.

4. When to replace

If the battery swells or the case bulges, stop using it and replace it immediately — swelling is a fire risk, not just a convenience issue.
